The recent unrest in the Middle-East is highlighting a particular weakness of relational databases; the fact that they are inelastic.

Consider this, in January, activists in Egypt call for an uprising in their country. The world watches, and follows the news on the internet. One place a lot of people looked at was Al-Jazeera.This put a real strain on the databases that powered this site. [...]
